Becoming a Content Writer: Did I Became One In 2022?

I never imagined myself as a writer, but last year, I took the leap and started sharing my thoughts and ideas on Medium. My first article went live on January 10th, 2022.

This post got an “impressive” number of 31 views..! Though small, this was just the beginning of my journey. Over the course of a year, I published 82 articles.

By publishing all of that content, promoting it in my communities and through relevant publications:

  • I have now attracted 364 followers
  • My articles together have 31k views
  • My monthly views last few months average around 3500 views

In addition to that I was able to join the Partner Program since July last as well. After reaching 100+ followers, my account satisfied all entry conditions to apply for the program, so I did.

These were all encouraging events and milestones to reach. Each clap, each new follower, and every comment on my articles motivates me to keep writing and sharing my ideas.

What Defines a Content Writer?

When can you consider yourself a Content Writer? To answer that, I found a definition that I think fits nicely:

A content writer is a professional who creates written material for digital media, such as websites, blogs, articles, and social media, with the purpose of informing, engaging, and attracting a target audience.

This definition highlights three important aspects of being a Content Writer: written material, the intended message and the target audience.

Writer + Content would be written material, of course. An article published on Medium, I would say fits this definition, check.

Next content comes in different forms. Articles, blogs, social media posts and webpages. So its not just (long form) articles, but also social media posts which are very short in general and everything in between.

Lastly the purpose of the piece could be aimed at informing, engaging or attracting a specific target audience. This has to do with the intended message of the content piece one is working on.

Did I Became a Writer in 2022?

When looking at my content I can now determine if I achieved being a writer. So how did I do regarding:

  • Different content forms?
  • My content purpose?
  • Reaching my target audience?

Target Audience

To start, let’s focus on the target audience. As you may have read in many “How to Blog” articles, it’s important to find a niche to concentrate your content on.

In my case, my niche is Crypto-related topics. My fascination with crypto began in 2016 and since then, I have been exploring various fields within this area through research and hands-on experience. Before I started writing about it, I was already actively involved in various communities, primarily on Telegram. I even had my own channels and groups.

This was a great starting point as I knew my target audience and had easy access to it. However, generating traction for my articles still requires promotion in the right places.

Content Purpose

I learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t while writing, publishing and tracking the performance of my articles. I quickly discovered which communities had the highest engagement with my articles.

By following relevant events for these communities, such as new product releases or platform developments, I saw a surge in views and likes on my articles.

With this knowledge, I decided to focus on these communities and stay informed about their projects. I now write summaries and explanatory articles on any new announcements to educate and inform the interested community members and those considering getting involved.

Content Forms

As briefly touched earlier, an article needs promotion. Whereas the article is the core of the message and contains extensive information, I had to create promotional short messages as well to convince people to take a look. This already includes three different content forms.

First, of course, the article or blog post itself. Second, I used Twitter to spread the word about the article once it got published. Twitter as you know is very accessible while at the same time could be used to have a big reach even if you have a small personal following. Using the right tags in your tweet spreads your message to others easily.

Third, since I am already involved in some of the communities my content is focused at, I promote my articles in there (mainly on Telegram) as well. The format of this promotion is pretty similar to broadcasting on Twitter but there are some differences.

The main differences I would say are:

  • How your message is distributed to the target audience (broadcasted using tags on Twitter, more direct on Telegram)
  • The size of the message (limited on Twitter, not so much on Telegram)
  • The potential of interaction

Although some aspects are similar to Twitter, Telegram offers more opportunities for discussion and interaction with the target audience. Twitter’s focus is more on getting the message seen, while Telegram allows for deeper conversation on the topic.

So Can I Call Myself a Content Writer Now?

I would conclude with a Big, Fat: YES!

Considering all the aspects as discussed above, I match all the conditions to say I am a Content Writer.

However, whether I am a…

  • …successful
  • …failed
  • …interesting
  • …boring
  • …intriguing

… or any other type of content writer is not for me to say, as I am still at the beginning of my journey. I only started a year ago, but I will keep sharing my experiences.

Wrapping up

This is my first article about a totally different topic than what I’m normally covering. It was actually quiet interesting to take a look back at my journey so far, what it brought me and how it developed.

The process of writing this piece already gave me several new ideas for future articles, so you can expect to hear more from me.
